Why Self-Love Matters: The Power of Self-Marriage

Tom Elliott's recent discussion on Melbourne's 3AW's Drive program about Erin Molan's self-marriage, along with several other single women in March (pictured below), highlighted how misunderstood the concept of self-marriage or sologamy is, especially amongst men. Elliott's response to my personal story of self-marriage, was met with confusion and lack of understanding. While single life has become more and more accepted in recent years, many still view it as negative and associate it with loneliness, depression and low self-worth. This outdated view of single life fails to recognise that many people are choosing to live life solo, either by choice or circumstance, and are loving it for the freedom and independence it brings.

The practice of self-marriage is a radical act of self-love and self-care, where one commits to being their own best friend and partner for life. A self-marriage ceremony is not legally binding and is not necessarily a commitment to celibacy or lifelong singledom. It is a way of validating and appreciating oneself, rather than relying on someone else for happiness.

Although self-marriage is currently dominated by women, there are men who have also married themselves. The reasons behind a self-marriage can vary and are often a deeply personal expression of self-love and commitment. Some people may enter into a self-marriage after a period of grief following a breakup or loss, while others may simply prefer living life solo.

Whatever the reason, self-love is important and necessary to cultivate in oneself. It is not narcissistic or selfish, but rather a healthy way of appreciating oneself and taking responsibility for one's own happiness and mental well-being.
