Sologamy or self-marriage isn’t anything new, but when I told my friends and family that I was going to marry myself, most were very surprised, and none had heard of the concept before. Most were right on board and loved the idea, a few took a while to get used to the concept. It’s believed that the first woman to marry herself was Linda Baker in the US in 1993, as a celebration of her 40th birthday. Since then thousands of women (and some men) around the world have married themselves. Quiky Alone founder, Sasha Cagen, explains self marriage beautifully in this 3 minute You Tube.
Why someone might decide to marry themselves.....
to acknowledge and celebrate their single status
to help heal from loss or grief associated with the end of a relationship, either through divorce or death
to help heal from trauma
because you’ve never been married, and a wedding ceremony is on your bucket list (why should couples have all the fun)!?
to experience the profound experience of making promises to yourself in the presence of others
because even though you're already partnered, you feel you’ve somehow lost yourself in your relationship (something not uncommon, especially amongst women) and you see self-marriage as a way of reconnecting with yourself in a deep and emotional way
because you believe self-love is equal to the love celebrated between two people
because you believe marrying yourself is a pre-requisite to loving another person
Whatever your reason, I believe that a ceremony to celebrate your self-worth is very worthwhile and a beautiful experience, and I have first hand experience, having married myself last month! The day was so much fun and so was the process leading up to the day..... writing the invitations, organising my favourite music, wedding cake, writing my own ceremony and personal vows, ordering my pinky wedding ring, wedding dress, making the corona cones and bouquets for myself and my daughters.
